Is your HVAC system providing the best ventilation inside your home? The average adult takes just more than 950 breaths every 24 hours. About two-thirds of those inhalations typically occur inside your house. Proper ventilation is important to maintain proper levels of fresh air and prevent stagnation, as well as dilute potentially toxic or allergic fumes or particulates.
Signs of Inadequate Ventilation
- Lingering odors. Smells inside the house should dissipate rapidly if ventilation is adequate.
- Humidity imbalance. A damp or steamy indoor environment is uncomfortable and promotes the growth of mold and mildew. On the other hand, overly dry air in the house may exacerbate physical symptoms including allergies, sore throat, and coughs.
- Dust issues. Conspicuous dust accumulation on surfaces usually indicates that the home does not have adequate ventilation and/or filtration.
How Much Is Enough?
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has formulated recommendations for achieving the best ventilation for your home. Basically, the ASHRAE scientists recommend 15 cubic feet of ventilated air per minute per each occupant in the home.
Ways to Achieve the Best Ventilation
- Make sure all HVAC supply and return vents are open at all times to maintain adequate air circulation throughout the house.
- Change your HVAC air filter regularly. Low system airflow caused by a dirty air filter reduces indoor air circulation and allows indoor pollutants and particulates to accumulate.
- Have ductwork inspected. Leaks in aging HVAC ductwork can cause stale, tainted air to be drawn into household airflow from zones like the attic or crawl space. A qualified HVAC contractor can test ducts for leakage and provide options for sealing the leaks, if required.
- Install vent fans. In areas that are common sources of odors and humidity — namely the kitchen and bathrooms — install exhaust fans that move indoor air outside through dedicated vent ducts.
- Consider whole-house ventilation. A single central unit installed in the HVAC ductwork circulates a continuous, balanced volume of fresh air throughout the entire house.
